Using Divinely-Given Power

We see God creating the world with just His words in Genesis 1. The crazy thing to me is that God didn’t reserve that power just for Himself…He gave us the power of words to create things as well.

Through words we can cast vision, we can inspire, and we can encourage…which leads to the creation of movements, nations, companies, and art.  Think about it this way…anything significant that has even been accomplished was accomplished because someone moved others to action through their words.

Lincoln was able to use 268 words in 2 minutes to inspire a nation that was losing hope in one of the greatest speeches ever given. Dr. King infected our country with his dream and changed the course of America with only 1,578 words. The reverse is true as well, Hitler was able to move an entire country to kill 11 million people (6 million Jews) with his words.

So how will you use your words this week? Will you use your words to create or to destroy? It’s never just a careless word. It only takes one word to kill a child’s spirit…crush a husband’s dream…and erase a wife’s self-esteem. One word.

Jesus said something very sobering about our words:

But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. -Matthew 12:36-37

Whoa! Sounds like it matters a lot to Jesus how we use this power He has entrusted to us. So what are you creating in others? Are you creating visions of better things to come or are you destroying everything good God created in someone? What would those closest to you say?
